Lying almost on the equator, Singapore is a thriving city-state that has overcome its dearth of natural resources to become
one of the juggernaut economies of Asia. In the crowded streets of Chinatown, fortune tellers, calligraphers and temple worshippers

of your favourite Hindu god... more

NEIGHBORHOOD FOCUS
Little India
Although Singapore is a predominantly Chinese city, it does have its minority groups and the Indians are probably the
most visible, particularly on the colourful streets of Little India along Serangoon Rd. This is another area, like Chinatown,
where you can simply wander around and take in the flavours. It can be very much a case of following your nose because the
heady aroma of Indian spices and cooking seems to be everywhere.
If you want a new sari, a pair of Indian sandals, a recent issue of 'India Today' or the 'Indian Movie News', a tape of
Indian music or a framed portrait of your favourite Hindu god, then Little India is the place to go.
It's also, not surprisingly, a good place to eat. Since many of Singapore's Indians are Hindu Tamils from the south of
India, the streets of Little India hold some superb places to eat vegetarian food...
